East London Mosque and homophobic speakers

Posted on July 16, 2017

You’ve probably already seen the CEMB v East London Mosque ding-dong:

Here are the kind of ‘conservative’ views held by some of the speakers (there are many more) invited to speak at ELM:

Yasir Qadhi

“…this is a part of our religion to stone the adulterer and to chop the head off of the sorcerer and so many other things, and to kill, by the way, the homosexual – this is also our religion. The fiqh rulings say that the homosexual be killed, OK? (inaudible comment from audience) I don’t know about this one, I’ve heard this but I haven’t studied this in detail but I know that his punishment is death. This is all a part of our religion. This doesn’t mean we go and do this in America but I’m saying if we had an Islamic state we would do this.”

“For those who have been around for a little bit longer than those who are eighteen or nineteen, look at how this own society and culture has evolved in the way it looks at homosexuals. In our own time, I remember as a kid in the eighties, which gives you an idea how old I was, growing up in the eighties I grew up, OK? I remember how homosexuals were looked down upon and the names that were given to these people, and how disgusted the average masses were with that segment of society. Now look, now look at how we have regressed, not progressed. Where it is impossible, forget a Muslim, even a Christian or a Jew can not stand up in public in front of a non-Muslim audience and speak against homosexuality, he is a homophobe, he is an evil person, how dare he preach his hatred against this group of people? A group of people by the way who were punished the likes of which no other nation has been punished. From the time of Adam until the Day of Judgement, no community, no group of people have been punished like the people of Lut have been punished.”

“…we are seeing an increase in many unnatural and perverse desires. Homosexuality is on the rise amongst non-Muslims, and now also amongst Muslims…if you have acted upon this urge – and we seek Allah’s refuge from this – know that this would constitute a sin. Yes, a major sin, and one that most people would be disgusted by, but realize that it is a sin alone and not kufr. Hence, even acting upon it and committing a major sin does not expel you from the fold of Islam. However, to stand up and justify it, or defend it, or write articles claiming that it is Islamic, without a doubt constitutes kufr, and not merely sin…I advise you to seek counseling, and to go to people who will understand your situation and who can direct you in a more specific manner.

“Either he [a gay Muslim man] does try to minimise this urge and find happiness in women…or if he really finds it impossible, well then the only alternative for him is to live a celibate life.”

Assim Al-Hakeem

“Homosexuality is an illness and something that Allah despises. The Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam has cursed those who have intercourse with their wives through the anus. The punishment and the consequences of having it with another man is even greater…You have to fight these feelings as you don’t have any excuse for not doing so. It is something that is not natural. Trying to legitimize it by saying that you were abused when you were a child doesn’t change a thing…If a murderer justifies his crime by saying he was beaten by a number of boys when he was young, this would not be acceptable from him…Therefore, try to stay away from whatever reminds you of this filth. Change your friends if they encourage you to do this. Socialize and mix with righteous people in masjids and in circles of knowledge where you can learn the Quran and the Sunnah. This will keep you closer to Allah and away from Satan.”

“Islam is the religion of Allah. Applying other laws is unacceptable and in some incidents, it would nullify Islam. Allah created humans and knows what is best for them. Man-made laws are not consistent as they change in accordance to people’s whims and desires. 50 years ago, homosexuality was a felony punishable by death in all countries of the world. Now, we see it marketed not only in the media but also in primary schools in the so called civilized world! Mark my word; in coming years, you will find people legislating the permissibility of marrying your own mother and sister. Incest would soon become normal. It wouldn’t be long before you hear perverts calling for the permissibly of pedophilia. People are worse than animals when left to follow their desires. Who determines what is right and what is wrong? It is not the moral compass as this changes y time. It is Allah the almighty who created us and knows what is best for us.”

“If you refer to the Old Testament you will find that homosexuality is forbidden and the punishment for that is stoning to death. In Islam the same thing applies. Homosexuality is not something that is natural. It is something that a person convinces himself by and it’s an abnormality that must be treated and it must not be accepted as a normal thing. Unfortunately n the West, as in France for example where they fight the face veil of a woman who is a Muslim, they encourage people to come out of the closet, as they say. To come out of the closet to say their sexual orientation. To say and declare without being shy or afraid to say their preference in their sexual relationship. And we have seen gay marriages, we have seen so many things that go against nature. Not even in the animal world you will find this abnormality. And homosexuality is something that cannot be tolerated in Islam.”

“As Muslims, we follow what Allah commands us without seeking the reason or the wisdom behind it. This is a true sign of our submission to the will of Allah…Homosexuality is not natural. If people were allowed to do so, illnesses would spread among them (aids) and they will not reproduce. It takes all the bashfulness and good character of people and turns them into animals that seek only their sexual satisfaction through weird ways.”

Murtaza Khan

“It’s only [because of] the modernism living in this country that people begin to inject this disease amongst the people… You can wear the brightest rainbow colour hijab and it doesn’t really matter because you’re living in a Western country. You can wear tight fit Gucci and Armani and wear a kufiya on your head, and keep a beard and say that you’re a good Muslim and live in this society. Look behind the veil behind all of these organisations. All of these people, most of them come from a homosexual background. The designer labels that most of the youth wear, read the history of these people, Valentino, Versace, Moschino, all these people they were homosexuals. Homosexuals in their understanding, and homosexuals in the way that they portrayed it to us – the tight fit jeans. When we used to go to school, anybody caught wearing tight fit jeans was labelled as a homosexual person. As for today, it is a sign of your manhood, the amount of buttocks that you show.”

“No one in the world had ever done this action. No one had ever done this evil action on the world. (Islamic Quote) ‘You fulfil your sexual lusts and your desires with men rather than women’. (Islamic quote) ‘Indeed you are people who are transgressing the bounds’. Not even animals behave in that manner…Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. It doesn’t say that even in the Bible. So how did you come into existence if it’s a relationship between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. How did you come into existence? Answer that question. Where’s your existence? How are you going to procreate? You are going against the essence of your own religion and your own belief.

Now what is their punishment? According to the Bible, excuse me this is a Christian country, read the history of this country, Christian country. According to the Bible, the Bible says the person should be thrown down from a mountain and then stoned on top of that. That’s what Isa told you people. But they teach ‘no, you’re homophobic’ and those Christians who stand up against this abominable action which goes against humanity then they’re fundamentalists like us as well then. It’s your own Bible that teaches you that, don’t commit homosexuality. Don’t commit that evil sin. In the hadith we find about what happens to the homosexual individual. I’m not homophobic. I believe in a natural way of life. I’m repeating to you what your Bible tells you. In the hadith you find (quote) ‘You find the people doing the action of Lot, kill the one who does the action and the one the action is being done to.’ Punish that individual. Yet what do we find today? Gay Muslim societies. If I’m wrong then tell me I’m wrong. Gay Muslim societies. Flamboyant enough to boast about their homosexuality and their lesbian acts.”

Yusuf Chambers

“Now no one in their right mind ever calls for the execution of anyone living in a democratic state. Can you say that anyone from the Muslim community has ever called for gays to be killed, or apostates? No. Scholars refer to these measures to be applied when living in an Islamic state and when the rigorous conditions are met…Islamic law is only applied in an Islamic state and where rigorous conditions are met, and not until then. “

Ibrahim Hewitt

Islam, like most other major faiths of the world, categorically forbids homosexual practices (sexual relations between two men or between two women), regarding them as a great sin. In a society under Islamic law, such would be severely punished.

Muslim jurists have held differing opinions concerning the punishment for this abominable practice, some stating the punishment for fornication, while some stating the death penalty for both the active and passive participants. It is important to mention that these rulings are not given in an anarchic sense where a Muslim takes the law into his own hands. Rather for these punishments to be implemented, due legal process needs to be carried out, which can only be done under a state implementing Islamic Law. While such punishments may seem cruel, they have been suggested to maintain the purity of the society and to keep it clean of perverted elements, allowing for the spiritual development of its members in an ideal environment. The spread of this depraved practice in a society disrupts its natural life pattern and makes those who practice it slaves to their lusts, depriving them of decent taste, decent morals, and a decent manner of living.

Those who seek to fulfil homosexual desires necessarily damage the very fabric of society which is why Islam condemns such practices.

Hamza Tzortzis

“However, Islam just like any other way of life has a frame of reference. Most Western countries have laws that prevent the sexual abuse of children, polyandry and cannibalism. If it were argued that these crimes were really an expression of human nature, most would reject them as completely inappropriate actions.

Islam, like many other spiritual traditions, argues that homosexuality is not the right way to manifest the instinct of procreation. It is a behaviour that negates the Islamic vision of society which is one of extended families connected by marriage between men and women. Hence Islam has viewed the public expression of homosexuality as a crime and as a result has placed a mechanism in which to protect its vision for society.

Homosexuality is just one of many sexual practices that do not fit with the Islamic vision of society such as sex outside of marriage, wife-swapping and swingers parties! Many Muslims have had their own internal struggles with expressing their procreation instinct. With their conviction in the Islamic way of life, they have successfully re-constructed their dispositions to be in line with what they love, agree with and submit to – Islam.

Some people object to Islam making the public expression of homosexuality a criminal act. This is subjective and only strikes a chord amongst those who cannot escape the social constructs in their own societies.

There are societies past and present which accepted paedophilia and canabilism as normal parts of human life and they would find Western society oppressive preventing them from carrying out these practices. Like-wise some societies may view the legalisation of abortion and the enslavement of animals for human purposes as barbaric too.

Do you believe that rape and murder are relatively bad? Surely not, that would indicate that they can also be relatively good! Hence those who claim that making homosexuality a criminal act is wrong are totally inconsistent as they would have to objectively show that it is wrong – however they can not do that because, as discussed, that would mean they would have to believe in God – in any case, God says its wrong.”

Abdurraheem Green

“…the issue of homosexuality, which again is something which is a serious, serious sin in the religion of Islam which Allah (SWT) prohibited us from…and in fact, indeed again it is one of those things that has a proscribed punishment in Islamic law for people who are found participating in this what is to be considered to be an unnatural act.”

“…when evil and sins begin to be practiced openly then people imagine that this act is not really that bad and detrimental, because after all, others are doing it. As a result the crime becomes more widespread and a vicious and rapid vortex of moral decline occurs with the ultimate disintegration of society…Such crimes thus need suitable and effective punishments that act as a sever warning to others. A public crime deserves a public punishment.

Adultery is punishable by death, and a slow and painful death by stoning. It is indicative of just how harmful this crime is to society…The “harm” of the punishment for adultery is offset by the need of the “benefit” and protects the wider society. All of this also goes some way to help understand way acts of homosexuality are similarly treated so harshly.”

“First of all I don’t like to use this word ‘gay’. This word ‘gay’, to use it is already to be fooled by the propaganda of these people, OK? This word is used in order to make this evil and vile act acceptable in society. They should be called at least homosexuals, this is the least. Better to use a more derogatory term like sodomites, this is a better term. Sodomite refers, and therefore automatically brings to mind, in the minds of the people, Sodom and Gomorrah which are the two towns to which Allah sent the Prophet Lut alaihis-salam, who indulged, and they were the first people to indulge in this evil and vile act which Allah severely criticised and condemned in the Quran.”

At the very basic concept we all have to agree as Muslims that making a crime which is a ‘crime’ in Islam, to say it is actually a crime to have a problem with this ‘crime’, do you understand what I’m saying? It’s a criminal offence in England to revile someone because of their homosexuality. So now it has been made a crime to hate the crime. Can we accept this as Muslims? Can we say that Islam is compatible with this? Does any person in this room think that this type of ideology is compatible with what Allah has revealed? I hope not.”

Haitham al-Haddad

“Now we are living in the era of homosexuality. Before, there was the era of the bronze and the era of the stone, and then we came to modernism and post-modernism, and now we are living in the era of homosexuality. Because it is the worst thing in the world to speak against homosexuality and you will be the best person in the world if you praise homosexuality. Now even they want to terrorise anyone who speaks against what? Homosexuality. They don’t want even to have freedom of speech. I am against homosexuality, this is me…maybe post-post-post-homosexuality we will have, as we mentioned yesterday, a man looking for an animal life partner, yeah? Maybe. Getting married to a dog or getting married to a snake, like that type, who knows?“

“Now they want to define marriage between the same sex. A man to get married to a man and a woman to get married to a woman. Ibn Qayyim Rehmatullah Alaih, look at this, he said (Arabic) the homosexual activities is one of the most evil sins that Allah (jalla wa ala) hates the most. And he said that, after shirk, this homosexual activity might be the second biggest sin. Even he said it might be worse than a murder, these homosexual activities.”

“In order to combat the scourge of homosexuality Allah has ordained us to speak out, and that we should co-operate with others in righteousness and God-consciousness…We also appreciate the brave stance of the Nobel peace prize winner and president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in defending a law that criminalises homosexual acts and determinedly standing for higher moral standards.”

Interviewer: “But is it your suggestion to go back to maybe to where we were fifty years ago then? Is it your belief that it [homosexuality] is a mental illness? Is that what you want to reach in the debate?”

Haddad: “This is the debate that I’m calling for. Fifty years ago OK, this set of value OK, or this piece of value was like this. Whether that is better for our situation now or not, this is what I’m calling for.”

“…take any Muslim in the street and ask him ‘Does Islam allow homosexuality?’ He will say ‘No, Islam doesn’t allow homosexuality.’ Islam considers homsexuality as a sin, in fact a major sin, and in the Islamic state it is considered to be a crime as well. We should give people the space to talk about what they believe in…now all Muslims believe that homosexuality is unethical…those Muslims who believe that homosexuality is allowed in Islam, yeah? Those Muslims have committed something that might be considered as kufr or taking them out of the fold of Islam because they have rejected al-Quran.”

“…nowadays when you say the word homosexual they say it is about love, I love another man and we want to spend our lives together, so this is homosexuality…don’t tell me that homosexuality is about love. No, it is not about love. It is about a sexual relationship. So we need to be clear about what we are talking about. What we are talking about is homosexuality in which the sexuality is the main element of this relationship between two people of the same gender… if this open sin becomes prevalent and we as Muslims do not contribute in telling people that Allah, the God who controls everything, who has the right to define everything, he dislikes this act, he prohibits us from this act, unless we say this then we will incur the anger of God upon us as Muslims. We have to be clear and vocal that God does not like this act at all. Now they are threatening us by calling us homophobic if we say that God does not like this, in order to threaten us from speaking what the Quran says about this, what Islam says, what the creator says about this. The conclusion is we as Muslims, Islam as a religion, will not allow something called a man to marry a man. Islam will never allow this. Islam will never allow this to be a normal relationship between two people from the same gender, full stop.”

East London Mosque’s complaint over CEMB’s ‘Islamophobic banners’ at this year’s Pride parade is taking the piss.
